CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Korekiyo Shinguji
Age: Aprox. 17
Canon: Danganronpa V3
Canon Point: Post Chapter 3
Character Information: Wiki Page here! As you will probably notice, Korekiyo will be dead at this canonpoint. I listed it as post chapter 3 to avoid spoiling people.

Personality: The following is a fabrication created by Team Danganronpa for the show Danganronpa V3. We do not know what Korekiyo was like before the killing game, so I will be playing him as he appears in the killing game itself.

Korekiyo Shinguji, or “Kiyo” as he is called in the official translation, is a rather strange fellow. He spends his time lingering on the sidelines, watching people go about their business and taking note of how beliefs and customs affect those people. As an anthropologist, he takes great interest in how people come up with traditions and legends that remain in the public consciousness for ages. You don’t even have to ask him to explain various topics related to his studies, for he enjoys giving people lectures on things he is interested in. For example, one of his Free Time Events (FTEs) with Saihara consisted of him discussing the myth of Medusa and his take on the story. He’ll also discuss things he doesn’t particularly agree with, such as gods like Angie’s god Atua being actual beings instead of ideas conjured up by people as an explanation for things they don’t understand. He isn’t religious, but he takes interest in studying these religions through an anthropological lens. (The Fog and Fourth Gods are gonna throw him off so much.)

All this studying has led him to believe that all of humanity is infinitely beautiful, good or bad. He sees no wrong in openly discussing morbid topics, like bringing up how Gonta could easily crush a child’s skull or considering the whole killing game as field work. See, human behavior in times of hardship such as the killing game is also beautiful to him because it showcases the human emotion that leads to drastic measures. Even the concept of “murder is bad” is merely the result of collective human aversion to killing their own kind resulting in murder becoming taboo and illegal in nearly every civilization. If killing becomes necessary for some reason, like in a killing game or something, he wouldn’t mind having to take someone to their grave.

Yes. He has openly stated he would kill someone if he has to. He realizes people will find him creepy because of his skewed morals and strange mannerisms. He does not care what people think, just as long as nobody digs into his darkest secrets...

Since he views such morbid and taboo things as murder in a purely objective light, he can remain calm in the face of danger. However, that does not mean he cannot be disturbed. Certain types of people annoy him. People like Miu who are loud and vulgar irritate him, people who toy around with precious artifacts like Kokichi does insult him and his work. He’ll put up with it if he must, but if he gets too annoyed or insulted he may scold the offender, or worse threaten to “tear out their nerves.” Still, although his glares can be intimidating he wouldn’t kill someone simply for being obnoxious. Those sorts of people are not worthy of death in his eyes…

But he can get pushed further out of his calm. As the entire class had witnessed as they closed in on him during the third class trial, he will start to panic if he’s being pushed into a corner. He’ll start stuttering, shouting and screaming in panic, steadily losing the ability to speak clearly or breathe properly until he calms down.

In times like those, Sister may publicly intervene.

A few words about his older sister since she is so integral to Korekiyo as a person. The two siblings were very close growing up. She was the one who inspired him to study Anthropology, she was the one who modified his uniform. As he admits to Shuichi in his FTEs, she was the one who influenced his feminine mannerisms. She understood him better than anyone else. Korekiyo loves her so deeply that he considers himself in a romantic relationship with her and is devoted to the point of obsession. Although he knows that incest is frowned upon in most societies, he believes in the awesome power of love so strongly that he wouldn’t dare get romantically involved with anyone else (although his love suite scene shows him being a-ok with sleeping around). Korekiyo is so devoted to his sister that he would do anything for her. Yet, he admits after the trial’s over that he couldn’t be her friend as well as her lover and brother, and she was so lonely he took it upon himself to find 100 friends to keep her company.

It would have been a noble act if his sister hadn’t died of terminal illness.

Korekiyo says he nearly went mad after she died, but perhaps he may have become delusional. After all, making friends for his dead sister requires him to murder innocent people so their souls would be sent to some afterlife, and he believes there must be some form of life after death as he puts merit into the supernatural and the occult. But he wouldn’t kill just anyone. No, there are specific criteria a potential victim- Er, friend has to meet before Korekiyo could even dream of taking her life. The friend must be female, for Korekiyo told Shuichi in a FTE that he would not let him meet his sister no matter how nice he was. The friend must also be of good character, or “pure and admirable friends.” He stated after the third trial that everyone except Miu and Maki were worthy of being targeted, which implies he won’t kill criminals or excessively rude and vulgar people.

So if this is how he sends girls to meet his dearly departed sister, then how is she able to step in when he’s having a panic attack? Well, in his final FTE with Saihara, he relates an incident where the natives of a village he visited tied him up and nearly beat him to death. In his near-death experience, he was reunited with someone who died on him. What he didn’t tell Shuichi was that this someone happened to be his Sister, and while in chapter 3 he admits he knows he cannot bring the dead back to life she’s been with him in spirit ever since… So he believes. In reality, he created a sort of alternate persona based off his sister. A tupla, to be exact. This tupla of his will speak to him, and occasionally he may speak on her behalf, such as when he tells Shuichi that his sister likes him in a FTE but then tells him that his sister doesn’t trust him while on one of the dates in the Salmon Team mode. Every so often, such as in the middle of the third trial, she will take control of his body and speak to him out loud. From how he acts when the sister persona is in control, we know this much about her: She is kind enough to comfort him, cold enough to order him around, and generally holds other people with contempt… Though that third trait isn’t that clear since she was defending him in a trial where he was the culprit. Korekiyo sees nothing wrong with this picture, nor does he seem to really regret murdering Tenko and Angie. The only regret he does have is not making enough friends for his sister, which is a very disturbing regret indeed.

But he does realize how other people feel about incest and murder, so he doesn’t make his twisted love life public. When he refers to his sister in front of strangers, he only tells them she is very ill and not dead. He tells people he does not have a sister complex when asked. He refuses to let anyone see him without his mask so nobody notices the blood red lipstick he wears for her… In fact, he goes as far as to cycle through multiple, identical masks specifically for different purposes such as bathing and eating as he demonstrated in one of his FTEs. He considered Kaede a potential victim in his second FTE with her, but he only asked her if she wanted to be his sister’s friend and revealed nothing of his true intentions. He tries his very best to murder without getting caught.

From what we have seen in Angie and Tenko’s deaths, Korekiyo tends to plan out his murders rather than kill on sight. For Tenko, he wanted to hold a fake seance and use a rigged floorboard to quickly raise her into a sharp blade. For him to get away with that, he would have to make it look like someone else set the trap, so he rigged floorboards in all three empty rooms on the third floor so he could put this plot into action no matter what room was chosen. Korekiyo can also work unexpected elements into his plans on the fly. For example, he hadn’t planned for Angie to walk in on him sawing the support beams on the floorboards. So he knocks her out, carries her body to her research lab to be murdered, and uses her own ritual and the locks in her lab to create a locked room mystery. Korekiyo was later happy to see Himiko pick out the room for the seance so he could frame her, and he attempted to use a rule Monokuma made up after Tenko’s death to pin Angie’s murder on someone else so that he has a chance to escape even after being proven guilty of murdering Tenko.

Still, as much as he likes being alive, he wouldn’t truly mind having to die. He’s a bit of a sadomasochist, for as much as he likes seeing the raw emotion of other people and taking in their pain, he also feels that receiving pain will get him closer to his sister. He realizes that people will have difficulty coping with the death of a loved one, and he himself is no exception. At least in death, he may finally be truly able to be with his sister in the afterlife… Yet, his execution subverted that hope and made him realize his worst nightmare: To have his beloved sister turn on him as she helped Monokuma exorcise his spirit from this world.
